about

This song is about healing from child sexual abuse in the context of a close friendship in the beautiful and harsh setting of New Mexico. It's about sustainability and self-expression. It's a jam-piece, written in an off-grid home with a rotating cast of musicians, sustainable builders, and kindred spirits.

lyrics

Found me cryin’ in yo’ bed
Asked what’s wrong and I said
It’s just a little too intense
You said I could handle it

It takes a special kind of man
To help me do what I can
To clean another man’s mess
And let me be my best

It takes a special kind of love
To learn to trust
To learn to touch
And open up

I am a bud
Soon to emerge
I feel the warmth
Is soon to come

I am a bird
Returning home
I feel the warmth
Is soon to come

The snow came in sideways today
The west wind had its way
A sudden chill changed the rain
Still my heart
Melts away

Mama, Kris is his name
I love the way he sets the pace
I feel impatient most everyday
Mama, it feels okay

Papa, come shake his hand
He’s so upstandin’ and acts like a man
He treats yo’ baby as best he can
Papa, come shake his hand

Sunshine, when you’re away
Sometimes I get so afraid
Then when I see yo’ face
Somehow, I feel so safe

The sun came in sideways today
The west wind took the clouds away
The sudden view, it changed my brain
Yet another beautiful New Mexican day

I give this distance
With utmost respect
I got a life to live
Until you get back

I can’t chase
Someone who needs space
But I’m in orbit
Just in case
You need me

The full moon comes out tonight
And the mesa will fill up with light
Most the stars will be out of sight
They’re still shinin’
Shinin’ for us tonight

My words may not mean a thing
But can’t you hear the feeling?
Ever-changing, means so many things
Like poetry
So nourishing, ever-growing
Like a tree

Life is like a tree…
